Navy visits Air Force with Commander-in-Chief's Trophy three-peat on the line

The Midshipmen arrive at their lowest point in three years, but history says nothing is decided in service academy games.

This Saturday at 6:00 PM (Spanish time), Navy travels to Colorado Springs to face Air Force in the first chapter of the battle for the 2026 Commander-in-Chief's Trophy. What's at stake: the possibility of a third consecutive title for the Midshipmen, something they haven't achieved since the early 2000s. [1]

Context: Navy without their star

The numbers are not on Navy's side this season. With a 1-2 record (0-2 in the American Athletic Conference), the Midshipmen arrive after falling to Florida Atlantic and UAB in consecutive games. It's the worst start since 2022, when Brian Newberry arrived to rebuild the program. [2]

The difference from the previous two seasons—in which Navy accumulated 21 wins—has a name: Blake Horvath. The quarterback who led the Midshipmen to two consecutive CIC Trophy titles ended his career in 2025. In his place, Braxton Woodson inherits a triple option offense that needs time to adjust. [4]

Air Force smells blood

Troy Calhoun's Falcons, in his twentieth season at the helm, arrive with a 2-2 record after an agonizing double overtime victory against Nevada (36-33). More importantly: Air Force is 20-8 at home against Navy in the history of the rivalry. [1]

The altitude factor always weighs at Falcon Stadium. At over 2,100 meters above sea level, visiting teams suffer especially in the fourth quarter. It's a detail Navy cannot ignore.

Keys to the game

What Navy needs

  1. Control the clock: The triple option remains Navy's DNA. If Woodson and Jackson Gutierrez can sustain long drives, they reduce Air Force's opportunities.
  2. MarcAnthony Parker dominant: The linebacker leads the defense with 28 tackles and 4.0 sacks. He needs to pressure Liam Szarka, the Falcons' QB.
  3. Avoid mistakes: With an offense still under construction, turnovers can be fatal.

What Air Force needs

  1. Exploit Woodson's inexperience: It's only his fourth start. The Falcons' defense has room to confuse him.
  2. Win the attrition battle: Two triple option teams = a long game. The fresher team will win.
  3. Don't waste the home advantage: A 20-8 historical record means nothing if they don't take advantage of the altitude factor.

History matters

The Commander-in-Chief's Trophy has been contested since 1972. Air Force leads with 21 titles, but Navy has dominated the last two years. Tradition dictates that the winning team travels to the White House to receive the trophy from the President of the United States. [3]

Navy defeated Air Force 34-31 last year in Annapolis and 34-7 in 2024 at Falcon Stadium. Two consecutive victories that the Midshipmen want to extend to three. [1]

The stat

If Navy wins, they'll put pressure on Army for the Army-Navy Game in December. If Air Force wins, the CIC Trophy race opens up completely. It's the type of game where the season record matters less than tradition.
