No. 1 and No. 2 both fall: the wildest Saturday the AP poll has seen
Georgia lost in Athens and Notre Dame in Provo. Five of the poll's top seven lost on the same Saturday, something that had never happened before.

Saturday 17 October produced a statistic with no precedent: five of the AP poll's top seven lost on the same day. It had never happened in college football history. [8]

Auburn topple the No. 1 on the last play
Georgia, the nation's No. 1, went 14-0 up at home and lost 27-24. Auburn answered with 24 unanswered points and, with the game level in the fourth quarter, a fumble by quarterback Gunner Stockton handed the ball back to the Tigers. [2] Alex McPherson settled it with a 34-yard field goal. [1] [3]
It was Auburn's first win in Athens in 31 years. [3] And the defeat carries a wider reading: it is the first time since October 1990 that the nation's No. 1 has lost in back-to-back weeks. [1] [3]
BYU stop Notre Dame in their own end zone
In Provo, eighth-ranked BYU beat Notre Dame 28-24 and stayed unbeaten. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier was involved in four touchdowns: he ran for two, threw one and caught another. The decisive one came on a six-yard pass to Walker Lyons on third and goal with 1:47 left. [4] [5]
Notre Dame had the last chance and came up four yards short: the drive died on an incomplete pass in the Cougars' end zone. [4] [5]
Texas, Alabama and Indiana complete the wreckage
- Florida 27-24 Texas, in Austin: a second straight defeat for the Longhorns.
- Tennessee 26-10 Alabama: the Volunteers won comfortably at Neyland.
- Ohio State 19-15 Indiana: the Buckeyes ended a 22-game winning streak.
- Miami 43-35 Florida State, settled in the second overtime.
Indiana's streak had reached 22 games and ended in Bloomington. [7] And another number frames the scale of the day: Georgia, Alabama and Texas had not lost on the same Saturday since 1996. [7]
Who leads now?
Miami remain unbeaten after winning their derby, Ohio State have the weekend's most valuable win and BYU have just toppled the No. 2. All three have a case to climb when the next AP poll is published, which has not happened yet. [8]
