NFL state of play after Week 3: six unbeaten teams, early alarms and an open race

The Bills and Chiefs remain steady, San Francisco has not slowed down, Jacksonville is gaining ground and five teams are already 0–3. Here is the league picture before Monday's Eagles–Bears game.

Three weeks do not decide a season, but they begin to separate good early signs from structural problems. Buffalo, Kansas City, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Minnesota have reached 3–0; Philadelphia remains unbeaten with one game in hand. At the other end, the Chargers, Miami, Houston, Tennessee and Tampa Bay are already 0–3. [1]

Who leads the way: five teams are already 3–0

Buffalo left Los Angeles with a 24–16 win over the Chargers despite turning the ball over five times. Winning that way does not make the mistakes irrelevant, but it does show a team capable of surviving its worst version. Kansas City had a cleaner afternoon, controlling Miami 24–10 and keeping pace in an AFC West that also has Las Vegas at 3–0. [3]

San Francisco has also completed a perfect start. The 36–30 win over Arizona left Brock Purdy with nine touchdown passes and only one interception through three weeks. Minnesota joins the 49ers at the top of the NFC, while the Raiders confirmed their strong opening with a 35–27 win over New Orleans and three Kirk Cousins touchdowns. [3]

Jacksonville and Detroit turn up the volume

Jacksonville delivered one of Sunday's clearest statements, beating New England 35–6 behind three Trevor Lawrence touchdown passes. A 2–1 record guarantees nothing, but the nature of the win puts the Jaguars in a more serious conversation in an AFC South where Houston and Tennessee remain winless. [2] [1]

Detroit is 2–1, but its offense offers one very concrete signal: the Lions have scored exactly 31 points in each of their first three games. Against the Jets, Jahmyr Gibbs produced 99 rushing yards, 65 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The consistency matters as much as the explosiveness: Detroit is finding production in different ways. [2]

The warning signs are no longer small

  • Chargers (0–3): they forced five Buffalo turnovers and still lost. That is a missed opportunity that is hard to disguise. [3]
  • Miami (0–3): it lost 24–10 to Kansas City and also saw De'Von Achane leave with a knee injury. The diagnosis and his availability require follow-up; there is no reason to speculate beyond what has been confirmed. [3] [5]
  • Houston and Tennessee (0–3): the AFC South already has them chasing Jacksonville, even with the season still very young. [1]
  • Tampa Bay (0–3): it is the only NFC team that reaches Monday without a win. [1]

The most open division: everybody is 2–1 in the AFC North

Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Cincinnati all share exactly the same record. The Ravens survived Dallas 34–31 in Rio de Janeiro and the Steelers edged the Bengals 30–27, two results that compressed a division with no statistical favorite after three weeks. [3] [1]

The view after three weeks

The established names — the Bills, Chiefs and 49ers — have already built some margin, but the Raiders' and Vikings' starts and Jacksonville's statement win keep the hierarchy open. At the bottom, 0–3 does not mathematically eliminate anyone in September, but it sharply reduces the room to keep fixing problems on the fly.

Monday's Eagles–Bears game will complete the standings. Then comes the first real test of this snapshot: seeing which trends survive once the sample is no longer so small.
