Is the Army–Navy Game tradition at risk? College football's new playoff could change everything

The College Football Playoff is negotiating an expansion to 24 teams in 2027. The first round would land on the weekend the two academies' game has had to itself since 2009.

On 12 December, Army and Navy meet at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. That game is not in doubt: it has a date, a kickoff time, a stadium and a network. [1] The one in the air is the next one, and the one after that, and every one that follows.

The College Football Playoff is negotiating an expansion from 12 to 24 teams from 2027 onwards. [7] If the format goes through as reported, the first round would be played on the second weekend of December — precisely the window the Army–Navy Game has had to itself since 2009. [8] [10]

A rivalry that goes far beyond football

The first Army–Navy game was played on 29 November 1890 on a gridiron marked out on the Plain at West Point, and Navy won it 24-0. [11] It was put together by a cadet, Dennis Mahan Michie, who served at once as captain, coach, trainer and business manager of the team; the 271 members of the Corps of Cadets each chipped in 52 cents to cover half of their opponents' travel. [11]

They have met 126 times through 2025, and Navy leads the series 64-55-7. [10] But the scoreline is the least of it. It pits the Military Academy at West Point against the Naval Academy at Annapolis, and the players are not professionals in the making: they are cadets and midshipmen who, on graduating, will serve as officers. [12] Hence the rituals: before kickoff each academy walks the other side's students — the ones spending the semester there — out to midfield, and at the end both teams sing both anthems together, starting with that of the side that lost. The December window is the other asset. The game moved to the second Saturday of December in 2009 precisely so it would have the day to itself, away from the noise of the rest of the college calendar. [10] CBS has broadcast it exclusively since 1996 and holds the rights through 2038. [10] [4] That combination — a Saturday with no competition and a long-term contract — is what is at stake.

What would change with a 24-team playoff?

The current format is 12 teams with straight seeding: the top four in the final ranking get a first-round bye and the five highest-ranked conference champions are guaranteed a place. [9] The proposal under negotiation doubles the bracket.

  • Twenty-four places under the "19+4+1" model: nineteen at-large bids chosen by the committee, four for the Power Four conference champions and one for the best champion from the rest. [7]
  • The top eight would get a first-round bye and the remaining sixteen would play each other. [8]
  • The first two rounds would be played on the higher seeds' campuses; the quarter-finals and semi-finals in the six CFP bowls. [8]
  • Conference championship games would disappear, and that is where the room in the calendar comes from. [7] [8]

None of this is final. The financial terms with ESPN and the commissioners' sign-off are still outstanding, and the Big Ten and SEC decision has a deadline of 1 December 2026. [7]

The clash with the Army–Navy Game

For a 24-team bracket to finish by mid-January, the first round has to start on the second weekend of December and the second round on the third. [8] [4] That is the clash: the second Saturday is Army–Navy's.

The option most often mentioned is to move it up a week, to the first Saturday of December, which would be freed up by the disappearance of the conference championship games. [4] It has two advantages: the game would keep a Saturday with no other FBS or NFL football on it, and both academies would be free for the rest of the month to play in the playoff if they qualified. [4]

Others have been floated. Army head coach Jeff Monken told The Athletic he was in favour of moving it to Thanksgiving Day or that weekend, with an exclusive four-hour television window. [5] Giving Army or Navy a first-round bye so they could play their game during that playoff weekend has also been raised. [5] None has been adopted.

Army and Navy want to protect their tradition

The two academies are not defending what an ordinary club would. Army's director of athletics, Tom Theodorakis, summed up his position to Front Office Sports in October: "I view these conversations as a win for the academies and 'America's Game.'" He added: "If we can preserve Army-Navy while giving our cadet athletes the opportunity to be in the College Football Playoff, that's the best of both worlds." [4]

Months earlier, the same Theodorakis had set out three conditions: "We need to be able to compete for conference championships. We need to be able to play the game on the biggest stage possible and we need to be able to tell this story to America." [5] His Navy counterpart, Michael Kelly, framed it as a question of fit: "It's not just a game that fits into a four-hour window. It's how the whole puzzle comes together." [5]

The matter even reached the White House. On 20 March 2026, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled "Preserving America's Game" directing the Secretary of Commerce, the FCC chairman, the CFP itself, the networks and the NCAA to work to secure an exclusive broadcasting window for the game. The final version, however, fixes no specific date: it leaves the timing to the parties. [6]

What happens to the 2026 Army–Navy Game?

Nothing. This year's edition sits outside the debate, because the format under negotiation would not take effect until 2027. [7] The 127th Army–Navy Game [10] is played on Saturday 12 December 2026 at 3 pm ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, broadcast by CBS and presented by USAA. [1] That is 9 pm in mainland Spain.

It is the first time the game has returned to East Rutherford since 2021, when Navy won 17-13; the Midshipmen are 4-1 there across the history of the series. [2] Tickets have been sold out since 28 September. [3]

What is really at stake

It is worth taking the air out of the easy headline: nobody has proposed scrapping the Army–Navy Game. Not the CFP, not the conferences, not the networks, not the academies. The game has a television contract signed through 2038 and institutional backing few sporting events can match. [4] [6]

What is in discussion is its date and, above all, the exclusivity of its window. Since 2009 Army–Navy has had a December Saturday to itself, and that solitude is part of what made it "America's Game". If the playoff takes that weekend, the game will have to move; and the real question is not whether it survives, but whether it survives without sharing a screen. The answer starts being written before 1 December. [7]
